Women’s Volleyball rallies to defeat Medaille in a marathon match
BUFFALO, N.Y.— Alena McKelvey (Buffalo/City Honors) and Bryanna Fisher (Brooklyn/Midwood) recorded a combined 29 kills as Buffalo State rallied by winning three-straight sets, including a 20-18 thrilling final set, to survive a five-set marathon for a non-conference win in this evening's home opener. Buffalo State traded points early in the first set, until Medaille closed the set with a pair of 3-0 runs to claw their way to a win the first frame, 25-21.
The Mavericks raced out to a 7-0 run in the second set and used the momentum to claim the second set 25-21.
The Bengals regrouped following a 2-0 set deficit to take an early 13-7 lead in the third set. Medaille responded with a 5-0 run, fueled by a few attack errors by Buffalo State, to take a 21-18 lead.
Jordan McKenna (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) took over the serve from there and lead the Bengals on a 7-0 run to give Buffalo State a 25-21 win.
Buffalo State and Medaille battled for much of the fourth set, but the Bengals used a 6-0 early and a 4-0 run late to claim the set, 25-20.
The Mavericks used a 5-0 run early in the fifth set to tie the game at 14-14. Buffalo State and Medaille again traded points until back-to-back kills from Abby Mosher (Little Falls/Little Falls) and Eimile O'Brien(Marietta/Marcellus) completed the Buffalo State comeback win.
McKelvey led the Bengals with 16 kills, seven digs and two block assists.
Fisher finished with 13 kills to go along with two block assists.
Mosher, O'Brien and McKenna chipped in seven, six and six kills respectively, while Brooke Federko(Jamestown/Jamestown) added 30 assists.
FOR THE FOES
Lindsay Howell led the Mavericks with 15 kills and a .444 attack percentage.
Eleanor Clark chipped in 13 kills and 22 assists.
UP NEXT Buffalo State will host the six-team Bengal Challenge this weekend in the Sports Arena. The Bengals will open on Friday against the University of Rochester at 5 p.m.
